This webinar will help headteachers, leaders and designated safeguarding leads (DSL) to understand their statutory duties in relation to safeguarding looked after children and young people.

It is a legal requirement for schools and colleges to help promote the educational achievement of looked-after children and young people. The ‘Promoting the education of looked-after and previously looked-after children’ DfE statutory guidance outlines the core elements that local authorities and schools must and should adhere to. This includes:

  • Ensuring that schools can meet the educational needs of the child and help them make maximum progress.
  • Hold joint responsibility of personal education plans (PEP) and use the PEP to help support children and young people, raise their aspirations and build their life chances.
  • Appointing a designated teacher and ensuring they have the relevant training.

In this webinar, safeguarding expert Dan Martin, from the National Children’s Bureau, discusses what the law around looked after children looks like and the vital role that schools have to play in their educational wellbeing.
