This webinar will provide headteachers, nursery leaders, teachers, practitioners and nursery assistants with advice and practical tools to help pupils explore and develop their literacy and vocabulary skills in line with statutory guidance.

The EYFS statutory framework states that it’s crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading and that children become comfortable using a rich range of vocabulary and language structures. This aligns with the early learning goals that children can re-tell stories, apply phonics knowledge and be able to write simple phrases and sentences.

In this webinar, Carl Pattison, early literacy consultant, English Hub lead and Early Reading lead for the Flying High Trust, will explore strategies to maintain challenge in literacy and discuss how staff can implement different methods of learning to promote learning and development.

Outcome 1:

Recognising when children in early years are ready for a deeper level of challenge and what to consider when judging levels of competence

Outcome 2:

Understanding the importance of challenging babies and children through routines, activities and open-ended questioning

Outcome 3:

Realising the need for effective interactions and exploring how to create an environment that provides open-ended opportunities

Outcome 4:

Evaluating how a child can be more engaged, if their fascinations are understood and used to promote learning and development

Outcome 5:

Identifying practical strategies and examples of where children can be challenged to develop their early literacy skills

Carl Pattison

Carl Pattison began his career as a Key Stage 2 teacher. His initial specialism was in Mathematics, and this led to him becoming a Math’s Consultant for the National Strategies in 2008. However, his desire to support children in disadvantaged areas remained and he returned to work in a school as a deputy headteacher. During this period, he began to develop his understanding in early literacy and the challenges children face. Furthermore, his step into parenthood also enhanced his desire to learn more about reading and the journey to becoming a proficient reader.

After a six-year period in headship and executive headship, he took up the post of English Hub lead for the Flying High Partnership. This enabled him to specialise in early literacy and reading for pleasure, whilst helping colleagues in schools to meet the reading challenge. He also works as the Early Reading lead for schools across the Flying High Trust and has established himself as an independent early literacy consultant.
