What is a web browser?

A web browser is the piece of software used to access websites. Examples include Google Chrome, Microsoft’s Edge, Apple’s Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

Browsers are available for both desktop and mobile devices and data can usually be synchronised between devices.

Data sharing is convenient, but web browsers do feed a lot of your data back to advertisers.

For more information on the associated risks and online safety tips for parents and carers, watch our explainer video, available to those with a National Online Safety membership.
