Aim: This webinar will explore what unconscious bias is and specifically how society can hold biases towards people, which can impact mental health. It will discuss how, in an education context, such biases can affect student and staff wellbeing and it offers guidance on building a mentally healthy school or college.

Rationale: It is fundamental of safeguarding that every child and young person receives the support they need from staff. Often influenced by factors of age, race, gender, geography and more, however, evidence suggests that this is regrettably not always the case. Whether due to stigma, a lack of understanding, bias or preconceived notions, some children and young people are more likely than others to receive attention for mental health concerns in school and college settings. What’s more, such assistance, however well-intentioned, is not necessarily presented in a manner that the young person or their families would have welcomed.
