It is essential that teaching assistants are prepared for this diverse environment so that they can support teachers to achieve the best educational outcomes.

Jess Gosling

Jess Gosling currently teaches in reception, in a one-form entry British international school in Poland. She is a whole-school CPD lead and has put in place training for teachers as well as documentation and support for new school staff. Jess likes to publish her research, which has been accepted by the Times Educational Supplement, NAPE Primary Journal, and Impact Journal for the Chartered College of Teaching. She often presents at conferences supporting EAL children. 

Prior to moving to Europe, Jess taught in Taiwan for four years, across KS1 and reception. She formed #WomenEd Taiwan, which supported teachers and enabled them to expand their network. She created several online and in-person events, including a CV clinic and a day focused on wellbeing. During this time, Jess researched and wrote a book to support international teachers, entitled, ‘Becoming a Successful International Teacher’. Alongside this, she created a Facebook group to help teachers find answers about international teaching. Additionally, Jess began to volunteer to work for TeacherHug Radio, where she records monthly radio shows, interviewing teachers and principals around the world. 

Before working in Taiwan, Jess spent seven years in Vietnam. She led a Year 1 team in a British international school, worked in an American-curriculum kindergarten and set up her own ‘stay and play’ sessions in a community hall. The experience of each environment led her to understand the differing needs of both the staff she worked with and managed and the parents. Jess also completed a Master’s Degree in Childhood Studies and Early Years with distinction from Leeds Beckett University in the UK. 

Jess’s first international position was working in Egypt, in a new school as a reception teacher. Here she worked in a large team and supported the development of the new reception classes and a house points system.
