This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and support staff with an understanding of how children and young people with SEND currently tend to use social media – and, crucially, how schools can help to ensure their safety on such highly populated platforms.

Ofcom’s ‘Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes Report 2022’ highlighted that children with “impacting or limiting conditions” are more inclined to be active on social media – but also more likely to have negative experiences on TikTok, Snapchat and the rest. Engaging with social media can be hugely beneficial for children with SEND, but – given that the potential risk to them is higher – we need to be aware of these hazards and able to advise SEND learners on identifying online threats.

In this webinar, Catrina Lowri – an experienced special needs teacher and SENDCo – explores what settings can do to educate SEND learners around social media: providing effective safeguarding while imbuing them with the skills to interact with the online world in safety.
