Secondary Science & Technology: Teaching Disciplinary Literacy to Enhance Attainment

This webinar will provide headteachers, curriculum leaders, subject leaders, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on teaching disciplinary literacy to help pupils read, write and communicate effectively and appropriately within the subjects of science and technology.

In its White Paper, ‘Opportunities for all: strong schools with great teachers for your child’, the government sets out its mission for schools: to increase the national GCSE average grade in both English language and maths from 4.5 in 2019 to 5 by 2030. Disciplinary literacy – the ability to read, write and communicate according to the conventions of specific subjects – offers schools an effective strategy for developing pupils’ literacy skills within and across all disciplines.

In this webinar, Dr Katy Bloom, senior lecturer and school learning and teaching lead with advanced skills teacher status, will explain disciplinary literacy theory and how this can be embedded into effective classroom practice, so that pupils are able to communicate in ways that are appropriate to the disciplines of science and technology, enhancing pupil outcomes and literacy overall.
