Preventing and Responding to Microaggressions Online

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors, teachers and support staff with a clearer and more detailed outline of online microaggressions: how we identify them; the ways that they tend to manifest online; and the consequences they can have for children and young people.

A recent academic study in the US found that young black people are subjected to – on average – five discriminatory experiences every day, with the majority of them occurring online. In some cases, the perpetrator is neither intending to cause offence nor even aware that they have done so, but these unconscious microaggressions are no less harmful. As educators, our duty to teach young people to be good global and digital citizens includes understanding how certain language can be offensive (and in some cases illegal), perpetuating stereotypes which undermine and offend people.
