Understanding and Teaching the Balance between Privacy and Security Online | Secondary

This webinar will provide senior leaders, teachers and teaching assistants with a better understanding of how privacy and security must now efficiently co-exist across our digital lives – empowering educators to teach in line with the Education for a Connected World framework.

The upcoming Online Safety Bill, along with existing guidance and legislation such as Keeping Children Safe in Education and the Prevent duty, makes a compelling case for the ability to monitor someone’s activity in the digital world. At the same time, however, the protection of an individual’s privacy – including their correspondence – is enshrined in the Human Rights Act. How can we effectively reconcile these two competing (and equally valid) priorities? Moreover, how will this complex legal and ethical balancing act continue to play out in educational settings?

Here, Gary Henderson – Director of IT at a large co-ed boarding school in the UK – discusses how privacy is an inalienable right which can nevertheless be used to hide serious online offences, while data gathering may serve the public good but can also be exploited for financial or political gain.
