This webinar will provide senior leaders and teaching staff with a greater awareness of the online risks to children and young people who identifying as LGBTQ+, as well as exploring the reasons that certain threats in the digital world are heightened for the members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Research by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network found that close to half (42%) of young LGBTQ+ internet users report being harassed or bullied online – a figure three times higher than among young straight internet users. This webinar suggests practical ways to ensure that young people identifying as LGBTQ+ are effectively safeguarded – such as ensuring proper training of all school staff, recognising the potential signs of vulnerability, and adopting appropriate strategies for prevention and intervention in the event of a harmful situation online.

Here, experienced safeguarding practitioner Beth Davies – with reference to relevant statistics and government guidelines – highlights the breadth and scope of this issue, and outlines why it is increasingly essential that schools and colleges stay informed and educated on the topic.
