This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, English leads and literacy coordinators with expert insight into findings and recommendations from Ofsted’s research project on struggling readers in secondary schools, which can be used to inform practice, raise standards of literacy and enhance outcomes for pupils both during school and in later life.

On 31 October 2022, Ofsted published ‘‘Now the whole school is reading’: supporting struggling readers in secondary school” which reports findings from visits to six secondary schools in which a higher-than-expected proportion of poor readers got a grade 4 or above in English language at GCSE. The report explains how they make sure that pupils who left primary school unable to read age-appropriate books with fluency become proficient readers who can access the secondary curriculum.

In this webinar, John Rees, who has over 25 years' educational leadership experience, will explain the background to Ofsted's report and highlight its salient points, including findings and common characteristics of literacy teaching and learning within the six schools which contribute to improved standards in literacy.
