This webinar will provide senior leaders, designated safeguarding leads and teaching staff with practical advice and guidance on how to support young people of secondary school age in choosing, building and maintaining online connections which are healthy, beneficial and safe.

Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges found that 88% of female students report being sent pictures or videos they did not want to see, with 80% being pressurised to provide sexual images of themselves. The teenage years are a crucial stage for mental and social development, and staff must be equipped to advise young people on what constitutes a positive online connection – and how to avoid or escape from potentially harmful online situations.

In this webinar Dr Rina Bajaj, counselling psychologist with almost 20 years’ experience of working with children, explains why making connections is so vital for adolescents, explores the increasing importance of peer groups at this age and outlines how to respond if a young person reports suffering any kind of online abuse.

Outcome 1:

Understanding the concept of safety in the context of both real-world and online relationships.

Outcome 2:

Recognising the signs of risk factors associated with unsafe relationships, and evaluating variables which can make certain young people more vulnerable to these risks.

Outcome 3:

Assimilating the tools to speak to young people confidently about online safety, including issues related to grooming, sexualised behaviour and consent.

Outcome 4:

Discovering appropriate ways to communicate effectively and supportively with young people about engaging in safe relationships online.

Outcome 5:

Identifying trusted, helpful resources that can be used with students within a secondary school setting.
