Kernow English Hub

Based in Newquay, Kernow English Hub is one of 34 such centres nationwide, created and funded by the Department for Education. The hub’s aim is to support schools in enabling pupils to flourish in early language and reading skills.

The team provide dedicated support in three areas: early language development and ‘closing the word gap’; age-appropriate phonics – specifically, encouraging fidelity to a single systematic synthetic phonics programme and supporting the effective use of decodable books; and promoting a love of reading by focusing on reading aloud, using high-quality texts and developing teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature.
