Institute for Effective Education, University of York

The Institute for Effective Education (IEE), based at the University of York, has established itself as one of the leading education research units in the UK. Its experienced team has expertise across a range of research methodologies, although it focuses primarily on quantitative research. It has particular strength in randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews evaluating classroom programmes and practices.

The IEE is working to establish what works in teaching and learning – and why. Areas of particular interest include literacy, numeracy, and science in the UK and overseas, but also early childhood education, parenting, widening participation, and the effective use of technology.

The IEE works with schools, policy makers, and other researchers to share knowledge and to build support for evidence-based education in policy and practice. It focuses on opportunities where it can provide expertise or practical tools. The IEE also carries out a range of other activities including events, publications and courses.
