Professor Emily Perry

Professor Emily Perry is Head of Research for the Sheffield Institute of Education, part of Sheffield Hallam University. Before joining the university, she was a chemistry teacher with experience in secondary schools in the UK, Hong Kong and Brazil. 

Emily’s work focuses on professional development, especially for teachers of STEM subjects. She works on research and development projects to design, develop, research and evaluate professional development activities – with a particular interest in the leadership of professional development, its facilitation and quality assurance.

Her research has been funded by organisations including the Department for Education, Wellcome and the Education Endowment Foundation, as well as local authorities, schools and trusts. In addition to projects in the UK, Emily’s work has taken her to Thailand, the USA and Malaysia, while she also spent several months in Ghana supporting chemistry teachers in senior high schools. 

Professor Perry has been a secondary school governor and sat on the board of a multi-academy trust. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and co-chairs the Teacher Developers’ Committee of the Association for Science Education.
