Dr Janet Graham
Janet is a teacher of business studies in secondary education. She has worked as a subject teacher, deputy head of department and head of department at Alperton Community School and has also worked at schools in Uxbridge, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Harrow. Janet has served as a Justice of the Peace (JP) and more recently, was appointed as an Anglican Licensed Lay Minister.
She has explored factors contributing to boys’ underachievement in secondary education in her published research, An Exploration of African-Caribbean Boys’ Underachievement and their Stories of Schooling, leading to the development of a mentoring programme for all students. This was launched with the help of Shaun Wallace, a leading barrister and television quiz master from The Chase, and Karl Brooks, an Education Psychologist.
The mentoring programme is aimed at supporting children and young people in planning their education, setting goals and targets, and in developing their focus to raise achievement and improve life chances. Janet’s ambition is to train mentors online to deliver a comprehensive mentoring package to help children and young people.
