Charles Claxton

Charles Claxton is an experienced teacher and school leader. He currently works in the Netherlands and is the Head of Multilingualism at the International School of Hilversum, a vibrant international school with a diverse student community from all corners of the globe. Prior to this Charles lived in Singapore, where he spent 6 happy years as the Head of World Languages at Dulwich College (Singapore).

Charles started teaching in 1994, and worked in inner-city schools in London, cutting his teeth as a French and Spanish teacher, before moving to his first head of department role in Southwark in the late 1990s. It was at this time that Charles started to develop an interest in global education, and how teachers can use a global context to bring learning to life.

Charles has experience of senior leadership in 4 different London schools, starting as an assistant headteacher, progressing to founding principal of a new secondary school in London’s docklands. He has applied this experience to his subsequent roles in international schools, where he is able to bring a ‘big picture’ approach to whole school issues.

Charles is an enthusiastic advocate for multilingualism, and works with whole school communities to champion a culture that celebrates the rich diversity represented across the school, at the same time as seeking to ensure that all students are supported – and appropriately challenged – in their own learning journeys.
