Introduction

Delivered by health and safety expert, James Whelan, this online moving and handling training course and certificate has been divided into five modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Module 1: Manual handling and the law

This module outlines what the law says about manual handling and the responsibilities of employers in terms of safe manual handling in the workplace.

Module 2: Consequences of poor manual handling

This module explores the consequences of poor manual handling, including back pain and how injuries caused by poor manual handling occur.

Module 3: The manual handling hierarchy of controls

This module explains the hierarchy of controls, how to apply these and how they relate to the manual handling regulations, as well as how to assess and reduce the risks.

Module 4: Manual handling risk assessments

This module covers how risk assessments should be used to identify, prioritise and control risks, taking account of Task, Individual, Load and Environment (TILE).

Module 5: Good manual handling techniques

This module identifies good and safe manual handling techniques, what to consider when performing manual handling tasks and how to do perform manual handling safely.

Outcome 1:

Understanding the legislation relating to manual handling in the workplace and the responsibilities of employers in relation to manual handling

Outcome 2:

Knowing and understanding the risks of poor manual handling and how injuries in the workplace are caused

Outcome 3:

Gaining a grounding in safe moving and handling techniques, including lifting and lowering, carrying and moving, pushing and pulling and handling whilst seated

Outcome 4:

Understanding the purpose of risk assessments in identifying, prioritising and controlling risks, taking account of Task, Individual, Load and Environment (TILE)

Outcome 5:

Understanding and knowing how to apply the manual handling hierarchy of controls and how this relates to risk assessments

James Whelan is a chartered health and safety expert offering fire risk consultancy, CDM advisory, training and environmental protection services to various commercial sectors – including construction, engineering, transport, manufacturing, agriculture and education.

He holds several qualifications, including Chartered status from CMIOSH; an NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety; and multiple NEBOSH certifications. James delivers training in NEBOSH General, Fire, and Construction courses, along with asbestos awarenessfire warden / fire awareness, working at height and manual handling

Previously, he served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy.
