Introduction

This course will provide you with the tools needed to support children in your setting on the topic of online safety. This course has been developed by a team of senior leaders in schools who are responsible for online and digital safety; John Insley, who’s a senior school leader and Head of IT and Computing, Brendan O’Keeffe, who is an educator and Deputy Head with experience as a director of digital learning in schools, and Simon Howe, who is a Google-qualified educator and a head of IT and Computing.

Module 1: The importance of online safety

This module will explore the importance of online safety, acknowledge the ever-changing online landscape, and how children in secondary years can make use of technology.

Module 2: Statutory guidance and legislation

This module will look at the statutory guidance around teaching online safety to children in secondary years.

Module 3: Initial challenges and first steps

This module will explore some of the common barriers teachers face when teaching online safety to children in secondary schools.

Module 4: Teaching online safety in the classroom

This module will explore how to implement online safety teaching in the classroom, including how to incorporate it into the curriculum.

Module 5: Examples of support

This module will explore where educators can turn to ensure that they have the correct support and information to deliver online safety lessons effectively.

Module 6: The future of technology

This module will explore how the future of technology and online safety is developing as well as the challenges that this presents to schools.

Module 7: Implementing and embedding an online safety culture

This module will explore how to meet the DfE’s digital and technology standards in your setting.

Understanding why teaching online safety to children and young people is so important and should form part of a whole-school or college approach to safeguarding children and young peopleonline

Recognising the guidance around teaching online safety and the support available to help meet secondary curriculum objectives
